Veterinary Courses & Occupation Overview
Being a veterinarian (vet) is an extremely rewarding job. Vets are the doctors of the animal world and are passionate about the health and wellbeing of animals. Vets provide routine pet care, diagnosis and treatment of illness and treat injuries. Routine care includes health checks, vaccinations to prevent disease and advice regarding diet and other care issues. Vets also perform procedures such as de sexing, dental work, x-rays, ultrasounds and can be responsible for euthanising animals.
There can be long hours involved and vets are exposed to sick animals daily so this career requires dedication to the profession and the ability to handle all areas of the role. A person considering this path also needs to have an aptitude towards science and good communication skills and patience to be able to convey information to pet owners.
With further study there are opportunities to go into specialised areas such as surgery, emergency care or species specialisation.
